NRA Basic Shotgun Instructor Training
It is required that the pre-course assessment be completed prior to attending the Instructor Course. The assessment may be conducted at any Dynamic Firearms Training Course involving a Range session and should be scheduled in advance. PRE-COURSE ASSESSMENT - Range · Safely load and unload all available demonstration firearms, covering at least: · A pump-action Shotgun · A semi-auto Shotgun · Complete Shotgun shooting exercises as follows (10 shots each at straight-away targets): · Pump-action · Semi-automatic Action · Must obtain a 50% score in at least one exercise
Lesson Details Lessons begin at lesson six taking into consideration that Basic Instructor Training (BIT) covers lessons 1-5 LESSON SIX (30 min) Venue - Classroom Introduction to NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course Lesson Plans At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to: · State the goal of the NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course · Describe the structure of the NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course Outline and Lesson Plans · Explain NRA Policies on safety procedures, course length, required materials, and teaching methods to be followed when conducting an NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course · Outline the content of the NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course.
LESSON SEVEN (90 min) - Classroom Teaching Shotgun Lesson I: Shotgun Knowledge and Safe Handling At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to: · Effectively teach the parts and operation of various shotgun action types according to NRA lesson plans · Effectively teach the NRA fundamental rules of safe gun handling · Conduct a safe shotgun handling practical exercise LESSON EIGHT (90 min) Venue - Classroom Teaching Shotgun Lesson II: Ammunition Knowledge and the Fundamentals of Shotgun Shooting At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to: · Effectively teach ammunition components, types, and firing sequence of a shotshell according to NRA lesson plans · Effectively teach ammunition identification, storage, and malfunctions according to NRA lesson plans · Explain the importance of determining eyes domination in beginning shotgun shooters and conduct an eye dominance exercise · Effectively teach the fundamentals of shotgun shooting according to NRA lesson plans
LESSON NINE (60 min) Venue - Classroom Basic Shotgun Instructional Method At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to: · Explain the importance of concentration for the success of beginning shotgun shooters · List various ways the instructor can enhance the students’ ability to concentrate · Describe the NRA eight-step method for training beginning shotgun shooters · Describe the coach/pupil method, ball and dummy technique and explain the value of using them in the training process LESSON TEN (90 min) Venue - Range Teaching Shotgun Lesson III: Firing the First Shots At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to: · Explain basic range safety procedures, range commands and shooting safety rules · Effectively teach students to shoot a shotgun at straightaway targets according to the NRA instructional method LESSON ELEVEN (90 min) Venue – Classroom/Range Teaching Shotgun Lesson IV: Shotgun Shooting Skills Practical Exercise At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to: · Develop their shotgun shooting skills by shooting at more challenging targets according to the NRA instructional method · Care for and clean a shotgun, and conduct a shotgun cleaning practical exercise LESSON TWELVE (60 min) Venue - Classroom Evaluating and Improving Performance of Beginner Shotgun Shooters At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to:
LESSON THIRTEEN (60 min) - Classroom Teaching Shotgun Lesson V: Shotgun Sports and Activities At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to: · How to improve their shooting skills through participation in the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program, the NRA Basic Firearms Training Program and competitive shooting activities. · Basic guidelines for selecting a shotgun · The benefits of joining an NRA-affiliated shooting club · The objectives, programs and benefits to members of the National Rifle Association
EXAMINATION & CONCLUSION (90 min) Venue - Classroom At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will:
· Explain the role of the examination in the training process · Explain the role of student evaluations · Explain the importance of student recognition · Take instructor certification test: Score of 90% required for full certification · Apply to the NRA for certification TOTAL
