NRA Basic Pistol Instructor Training
It is required that the pre-course assessment be completed prior to attending the Instructor Course. The assessment may be conducted at any Dynamic Firearms Training Course involving a Range session and should be scheduled in advance. Lesson Details PRE-COURSE ASSESSMENT Venue- Range A total assessment score minimum of 80% is necessary in order to attend an Instructor course · Complete exam and score at least 90% · Safely load and unload all available demonstration firearms, covering at least: · A revolver · A semi-auto pistol · Complete pistol shooting exercises as follows: · Two-handed standing position · One-handed standing position · ‘Random’ (TC choice) position · At least one target must have a 50% score or a group size less than or equal to 5 ½ inches
Lesson begins at lesson six taking into consideration that Basic Instructor Training (BIT) covers lessons 1-5 LESSON SIX (30 min) Venue - Classroom Introduction to NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course Lesson Plans
At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to:
· Know understand and teach the goal of the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course · Describe the structure of the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course Outline and lesson plans · Explain NRA policies on safety procedures, course length, required materials and teaching methods to be followed when conducting an NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course · Outline the Content of the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course LESSON SEVEN (90 min) Venue- Classroom Teaching Pistol Lesson I: Pistol Knowledge and Safe Handling
At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to: · Effectively teach the parts and operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols according to NRA lesson plans · Effectively teach the NRA fundamental rules of safe gun handling · Conduct a safe pistol handling practical exercise
LESSON EIGHT (90 min) Venue- Classroom Teaching Pistol Lesson II: Ammunition Knowledge and the Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting
At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to: · Effectively teach ammunition components, types and firing sequence of a cartridge according to NRA lesson plans · Effectively teach ammunition identification, storage, and malfunctions according to NRA lesson plans · Explain the importance of determining eye dominance in beginning pistol shooters and conduct an eye dominance exercise · Effectively teach the five fundamentals of pistol shooting according to the NRA · lesson plans
LESSON NINE (60 min) Venue- Classroom Basic Pistol Instructional Method At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to: · Explain the importance of concentration for success of beginning pistol shooters · List various ways the instructor can enhance the students’ ability to concentrate · Describe the NRA eight step method for training beginning pistol shooters · Describe the coach/pupil method , ball and dummy technique, and explain the value of using them in the training process LESSON TEN (90 min) Venue- Range Teaching Pistol Lesson III: Firing the First Shots At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to: · Explain basic range safety procedures, range commands and shooting safety rules · Effectively teach students to shoot a pistol from the benchrest position according to the NRA instructional method · Effectively teach students to shoot a pistol from the two handed standing position according to the NRA instructional method LESSON ELEVEN (90 min) Venue - Classroom Teaching Pistol Lesson IV: Two-handed Standing and One-handed Standing Shooting Positions At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to: · Effectively teach students how to properly score a target · Explain to students basic guidelines for selecting a pistol · Identify the materials needed to clean a pistol to ensure your students can clean a pistol safely
LESSON TWELVE (60 min) Venue - Classroom Evaluating and Improving Performance of Beginner Pistol Shooters At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to: · Explain the definition, purpose, and process, of evaluating beginning pistol shooters. LESSON THIRTEEN (60 min) Venue - Classroom Teaching Pistol Lesson V: Pistol Sports and Activities · EXTRA – If time permits (60 min) - Classroom Video: A Woman’s Guide to Firearms (Lyon House Production, sold by NRA) At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to: · Explain how to improve their shooting skills through participating in the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program, the NRA Basic Firearm Training Program, and competitive shooting. · Describe the benefits of joining and NRA-affiliated shooting club · Describe the objectives , programs, and benefits to members of the National Rifle Association EXAMINATION & CONCLUSION (90 min) Venue - Classroom At the conclusion of this section instructor candidates will be able to: · Explain the role of the examination in the training process · Explain the role of student evaluations in instructor development · Explain the importance recognizing students upon successful completion of a student training course · Take instructor certification test: Score of 90% required for full certification · Applying to the NRA for certification as a pistol instructor
